Travis County, Texas is in Central Texas. Travis County was established in 1840 and Austin was named as the county seat just a few days after being named the state capital. Pflugerville, a rapidly growing community north of Austin, is Travis County’s other major city. A city rich in German heritage, Pflugerville is host to the annual DeutschenPfest, a celebration of German arts, crafts, food and music.
Several major highways link Travis County to the rest of Texas and the nation. Interstate 35 runs through Austin, linking Travis County to San Antonio. Highway 71, US 290, and US 183 also serve the county. The Austin Bergstrom International Airport provides air transportation service. Other transportation resources include Amtrak, Union Pacific Railroad and Greyhound. The Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority provides public bus and trolley transportation in Austin and seven other Travis County communities.
In the heart of Texas, with the beautiful Colorado River running through the county, Travis County, Texas is known for an abundance of scenic areas. Travis provides public access to Lake Travis and adjacent Hill Country lands. Travis County has 26 parks which combine to offer approximately 7,300 acres of parkland countywide with facilities for family gatherings as well as trails for walking, jogging and bicycling.
The Lake Travis area of western Travis County Lake Travis is a recreational paradise. Lake Travis is 63.5 miles long, over four miles wide, covering nearly 19,000 acres. Communities comprising the Lake Travis area include the City of Bee Cave, the Village of Briarcliff, the Village of the Hills and the City of Lakeway.
